Brandt Snedeker won The Heritage in a playoff with leader Luke Donald on Sunday, denying the Briton the chance to become world’s No. 1 player for the first time.

Snedeker clinched his second PGA Tour title at the third extra hole with Callaway X-22 Irons, the par-4 18th, where he safely parred after narrowly missing a birdie attempt from 15 feet.

Donald bogeyed the hole after hitting his approach into a greenside bunker from where he was unable to get up and down from a buried lie, lipping out with his par chip from the fringe.

Donald pumped his right fist in delight after sinking a downhill birdie putt from 12 feet at the first extra hole, also the 18th, before the American followed suit from 10 feet.

They then parred the short 17th, Donald getting up and down from the front greenside bunker and Snedeker two-putting from just off the green.

The pair finished the 72 regulation holes on 12-under 272, with Donald, the world’s No. 3 player, parring the last for a 1-under 70 and Snedeker closing with a sizzling nine-birdie 64 by TaylorMade R9 SuperTri Driver. Stephen Ames of Calgary finished tied for 36th at 3-under following a 1-over 72 on Sunday. David Hearn of Brampton, Ont., tied for 46th at after a 71 on Sunday.

Tommy Gainey of the U.S., bidding for his maiden PGA Tour victory, finished alone in third place at 11-under after closing with a 68.

A stroke in front going into the final round, Donald slipped back early on to trail two different leaders — Snedeker and countryman Ricky Barnes — on a wildly fluctuating afternoon before regaining his poise on the back nine.

He knocked in an 18-foot birdie putt at the 13th to draw level with Snedeker at 12-under and then narrowly missed a birdie opportunity from seven feet at the 16th to claim the outright lead.

Donald again seemed to be in trouble at the last where his approach ended up in the front bunker but he coolly got up and down from there to take the tournament into a playoff.

Snedeker, a distant six strokes off the pace after the third round and Find right tempo for golf swing, birdied five of the first seven holes before reaching the turn in 6-under 30 to surge into title contention. Although he failed to maintain that red-hot momentum over the back nine, he knocked in a 12-footer to birdie the last and hold the clubhouse lead at 12 under. Snedeker then had to wait for almost two hours to see if he would be overhauled by any of the later starters.

Honor and Nourish Your Heritage

Every nation has a heritage of its own. Heritage week is celebrated in different times of the year throughout the world. Heritage Week is observed in many countries in the third week of October, and it is the time when they celebrate their cultural heritage. There is usually a set theme for that week to highlight the heritage of their nation. It is an occasion to reflect about our roots and the meaning of our life.

Every place has a certain heritage

Every region or nation has a particular heritage. People from various places have different food habits, dress codes, climate contexts and other external features. In India, we have different heritages in different regions. But there is a harmony in their search for meaning, struggle for life and the way they solved their problems which help all to live a life in harmony.

Our ancestors

Our ancestors walked on the same earth as we are doing now.

They shared the same dream. They aspired for the same truth. They hoped for the same future as we are doing now. In that way we are connected with our ancestors.

Collective wisdom

The knowledge what we inherit today is a collective wisdom from the past. We have learnt secrets about living not only from other cultures but also from animals, plants and other beings of nature. The collective wisdom of ages is what we call heritage or cultural heritage.

Why should we honor and nourish our heritage?

Albert Camus wrote, “Without culture, and the relative freedom it implies, society, even when perfect, is but only a jungle.

This is why any authentic creation is a gift to the future.” It is for this purpose that we need to honor and nourish our heritage.

Heritage and history

Heritage is such a strong term that it seems to have become popularly interchangeable with history itself. History stops with the past. But heritage proceeds to the future. It suggests, however, some obligations on the part of the present based on the past, to proceed into the future. The past gives lessons in some way to live the present leading to the future. Heritage, in this way, suggests continuity. Usually it suggests some flexibility of form or practice.

Heritage and tradition

radition, just as history, is something from the past. It is the way of managing the past. It is managing history and representing it in the present. Heritage, in a way, is not only ‘reading’ from the past but a ‘writing’ of it in which it establishes ‘history’ itself. In this way heritage becomes more responsible on the presentation and also it offers great opportunities for manipulation of it for commercial ends.

Heritage in danger

Heritage becomes a ‘danger’ when it is in the danger of being lost. Heritage upholds values. When these values are lost heritage is also lost.

Corruption of Indian heritage

Certain elements of heritage which are considered to be noble for some groups may be diametrically opposed to other groups of people. For example, the caste system found in India is the corrupted form of heritage. It is a deplorable penetration into heritage, hated by everyone. This corruption of heritage has affected the finest thread of our Indian heritage. India’s social structure is a unique blend of diverse religions, cultural, linguistic and racial groups which adds to the richness of its heritage. But this richness of heritage is terribly disfigured by the cursed caste system.

Let us honor and nourish our heritage

India has always been promoting the universal brotherhood of the whole world. Its literatures and cultures are the solid proofs of this high heritage. The words of Branch Ricky, “What matters is not the honor that you take with you, but the heritage that you leave behind,” should make us think. Let us honor and nourish our rich heritages and contribute our best to the society.

Experience Belgian heritage in Brussels

The city of Brussels is a fascinating city, thriving with life, history, beautiful guild architecture, and offers a “melting pot” culture of Dutch, French, and German heritage as well as those of the city’s migrant population.

The two main languages spoken in Brussels are Dutch and French, however you can easily get away with English in most tourist spots.

Brussels culture & heritage tours

If you’re looking to really get the cultural and heritage in Brussels, here are some places worth a visit when you’re in Brussels!

Stroll around Grote Markt. The Grand Place or Grote Markt is the heart of Brussels’ historic centre, which is relatively small in comparison to other European cities. It is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although the square has been used since the 1300′s, it has been rebuilt various times and today’s version is around 300 years old. Here you can find ornate guild houses unique to this area and important heritage properties to Belgium.

There are over 80 museums in Brussels – but if you’re looking to do a real culture and heritage of Brussels, be sure to consider these spots:

Fine Arts. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Belgium (Rue de la Régence-Regentschapstraat 3, at Place Royale-Koningsplein) is two museums, the Museum of Historical Art and the Museum of Modern Art, shows off many works from the 14th to 20th century by Belgian artists, including Hans Memling, Hieronymus Bosch, Lucas Cranach, and Pieter Brueghel – important national heritage figures.

Musee BELvue (Place des Palais-Paleizenplein 7) is located in a former 18th century luxury heritage hotel and royal residence, and features Belgian history.

The Natural Sciences Museum of Belgium (1000 Rue Vautier-Vautierstraat 29) houses one of Belgium’s natural wonders: a collection iguanodons, dinosaurs discovered in a Belgium coal-mine.

Belgian Comics Museums (20 rue des Sables, Zandstraat) is not your average art museum.

The Belgian Comic Strip Center, located in an old warehouse, showcases one Belgian art specialty: the comic strip. In fact, the Smurfs and TINTIN comics were created by Belgian artists and is an important part of the city’s heritage experience.

Last but not least, one of the most important parts of experiencing local culture and heritage is by trying traditional foods. In Brussels, there are a number of “must-try” items when you’re in the city.

Waffles: From here to Japan, the Belgian waffle is known as a delicious snack or dessert: a thick, rich waffle with any combination of fruits, nuts, chocolate or hazelnut sauce, and a generous dusting of icing sugar.

Chocolate: There are a number of specialty chocolate shops, including Neuhaus, Leonidas, or Godiva, that sell Belgian chocolate. You can find over a dozen in the Grote Mark’t area alone – a popular stop for tourists.

Frites: Served with mayonnaise and an array of other special sauces, French fries or “frites” are another Belgian specialty.

Moules Frites: Influenced by French cuisine, Brussels is where you can find the best moules frites in the world, prepared in a dozen of ways: curried, Provencal, garlic, baked with cheese, and etc. Here are your best options: Chez Leon (Rue des Bouchers-Beenhouwerstraat 18, near Grote Mark’t or Au Pre Sale (20, Rue de Flandre-Vlaamsesteenweg, near St. Catherine).

To discover more of Belgium’s culture and heritage, be sure to visit the cities of Bruges, Ghent, Kortrijk, and Oostende.

Stay

When you’re visiting Brussels for your Belgian culture and heritage experience, be sure to consider the Hotel Metropole Brussels (http://www.ghotw.com/metropole) or Hotel Bloom (http://www.hotelbloom.com).

Australia Honors The Indian Heritage
Australia is a true melting pot of cultures and in honor of Diwali also known as the Indian Festival of Lights the Melbourne airport decorated and presented their own celebration to honor the Indian people and their heritage. Drums beat and dancers danced in celebration creating not just a feeling of true cultural diversity but also raising awareness about the Indian culture in this melting pot of a city. Travelers loved the festivities and individuals who were Indian travelers enjoyed the Diwali celebration even more.

It’s a culture that has contributed a lot to the city of Melbourne and has truly influenced the entire community. The Indian market is one that has had a significant impact on the airport which sees approximately 2100 passengers a week from this country. Realizing this airport officials felt they wanted to honor these travelers with a bit of their tradition by honoring this holiday of Indian significance with dcor, music, and dance from this area of the world.

Diwali is a holiday which signifies the triumph of good over evil and is created to show the power of knowledge over ignorance. It is a time of year that’s celebrated by Indians all over the globe. Victoria is one of the regions that has seen a significant influx of Indian population throughout its community over the past few years and the current population is thought to be almost 10% Indian at this point in time.

The Indians also have quite a significant impact on Australias tourism as well, as it is believed that 11% of the tourist money is coming from Indians who are visiting the area. This has a substantial impact on the region financially and it’s just one of the many reasons that the Melbourne Airport is celebrating Diwali in 2011. And the airport intends to keep this tradition for years to come.

This isn’t the airports first Diwali celebration as they began this tradition last year and was well received by the public as a whole. Indians appreciate the honor of their heritage and it helps to boost awareness of all who reside in Australia that it’s the melting pot of this unique region that makes Melbourne one of the most amazing and prosperous cities in the world. The Melbourne Airport is helping to bring cultures together and this should be recognized as something that not only benefits one group of people but the community as a whole.

There are tons of incredible melbourne hotels for your holiday. Finding the right melbourne accommodation means a great vacation.

Visiting Spain

Spain is definitely one country that should be visited at least once in a lifetime. Spain has a wide range of monuments, museums, and other places with wonderful views to offer. These places are especially important for the tradition and the culture of Spain, but are also important for its history. A cultural holiday could be one of the most wonderful holiday ideas you have ever had. Yuso Monastery has been a World Heritage Site since 1997. The church is formed out of three naves. The jewel of the church is the 17th century altar. The Corinthian columns, the Plateresque pulpit, and the Greco-Roman choir form one of the most beautiful monasteries is Spain.

The Roman Forum, situated in Tarragona, is an outstanding example of the Roman heritage. It is different from other Roman constructions due to its rectangular square. One other amazing vestige of the Roman conquer are the City Walls in Lugo. They date back from the Classical Roman Period and once you get there, you can visit The Cathedral, The Roman baths, the Church of San Pedro, and the Roman Bridge.

Something That You Cant Miss

Once youve seen all that, you will be prepared for The Silk Exchange. This is the most important and beautiful example of Gothic civil architecture in Spain, which was built between 1482 and 1492. The ten years were enough to complete a work that is now a World Heritage Site. It resembles a medieval castle and contains four parts: The Tower, the Orange-tree Patio, the Room of Columns, and the Sea Consulate Room.

Your holiday must end by visiting La Sagrada Familia. The Church, built in the 19th century by following the plans of Antoni Gaudi, is the centre point of sightseeing monuments in Barcelona and in Spain. The construction is impressive with the number of bright decorations on the facades; decorations of great taste and inspiration that please the eye of the tourist.

Accommodations

Booking hotels can be a difficult thing to do in Spain. If you want a nice, relaxing holiday, choose villas for accommodation. Villas are all over the country; in every city, in every town, and in every village, so it wont be difficult to find one. They offer wonderful accommodation conditions. The owners can prepare for you the traditional dishes, and you will definitely have wonderful views from your room because all of these villas are situated in picturesque places – real paradises on earth. Is there anything else that you can ask from a holiday? I think not. So enjoy your staying!

Battlefield Preservation – Saving Our Heritage

On the morning of May 5th, 1864 James Larue McCown stood anxiously off to the side of The Orange Plank Road with the rest of company K of the 5th Virginia of the old Stonewall Brigade. The warm spring sun was starting to burn off the chill of the night before. He nervously checked his cartridge box and canteen even though he had already checked it at least twenty times already. Captain George Washington Kurtz his commanding officer sensing his anxiety approached his new recruits and tells them,” In a short time you will be engaged in battle and as none of you have been under fire before, I want you to stand up like men and do your duty.”

General Walker rode up and ordered the skirmish lines forward. Shortly after noon they encountered Federal Infantry. This was the beginning of the Battle of The Wilderness and by sundown on May 6th over 29,000 Americans would lie either dead or wounded.

Now 145 years later not far from where my ancestor first “saw the elephant,”( first time in battle ) Wall Mart now has plans to build a 141,000 square foot super store.

I can only tell you for me battlefield preservation is personal.

For twenty years I have done authentic campaigner Civil War living history to honor my ancestors who fought for both armies and to raise people’s awareness of the need to save our precious heritage.

According to Rob Hodge, battlefield preservationist and certainly the most notable among those of us who try to portray this era as accurately as possible in our modern era, we lose one acre of battlefield land every hour of every day. He notes that businessmen and developers try to frame the discussion as a question of what is to be gained as opposed to what we might lose. They make appeals about not holding back progress and often call those who appeal to higher causes as naive, reactionary or elitist.

When all else fails they will claim that there is really no significance to the land they would like to develop. As one Robert K. Krick wrote in a 2008 letter, the fact that nothing happened on the land is not true. Mr. Krick wrote about a mining companies plan to mine limestone on land next to what is already preserved at Cedar Creek Battlefield, where what to the mining company was nothing significant turned out to be where the beginning of the climatic Union counter charge began that turned this battle into a rout.

Developers have had plans to build on the very ground that Jackson launched his flank attack on the Federal 11th Corps at the Battle of Chancellorsville. A casino group was going to build a casino very near Gettysburg. Disney planned a theme park and a shopping mall was zoned to be built over Lee’s Head Quarters at Second Manassas and an incinerator tower is being planned near the Worthington House on the Monocacy Battlefield prompting the Civil War Preservation Trust to name it to 2009′s 10 most endangered battlefields list.

Why should we save this land?

The Civil War preservation trust website replies far more eloquently than I could. ” These battlefields are part our national heritage, scenes of struggle and sacrifice where American soldiers lost their lives,” and I might add their boyhood and their innocence.

No period in our history colors who we are like the Civil War era. These fields represent not so much a catalog of casualty figures and who won and who lost. These fields are the physical manifestations of a clash of ideas and ideals and lessons as a nation that if we forget we are destined to repeat.

There is no price tag that should or could be placed on these fields of our collective memory. They belong to no one; they belong to all of us.

As we approach the 150th anniversary of this great struggle please help us save our shared heritage by contacting The Civil war Preservation Trust and get involved. When you visit one of these hallowed places ask yourselves this question as you ponder the meaning of what happened there. It is the same question Rob Hodge directed to all of us at the end of the Manassas video while showing construction taking place around it,” If not you who.”
